Site of the Month:  Sauratown Mt. Quartz Crystal Site, also known locally as the Diamond Mine

Although the site is somewhat hard to find, it is well worth the trouble.  It is best approached from the logging road below the mountain.  It is a mile climb to the top.  There is a small pit that people have dug.  However, many individual small crystals occur as float on the surface.  It is a great site to visit with children, as they are bound to find a pretty specimen.  The quartz occurs as small (1/2 to 1 inch) individual crystals mainly on the surface over a 50 sq. ft. area.  Digging a little will produce more individual crystals and some druzy quartz.  Some of the crystals are remarkably clear.  The best time is after a rain.  If you take equipment, a shovel and a 1/4 to 1/2 inch sifting screen are ideal.  See pictures below.
